The following is a list of volunteer opportunities with Jefferson County Habitat for Humanity. Although the character traits listed for each committee would be desirable for the committee chair, they are not required for all committee members.

VOLUNTEER RELATIONS:
"Organized"
The people who serve on this committee help organize and contact other volunteers to set up time and places to work at the job site, at special events, or at the office. This group keeps track of volunteer hours, and sets criteria for volunteer recognition.

FAMILY SELECTION COMMITTEE:
“Discerning” This committee is made up of people willing to interview and work with families who have made an application for a home with Habitat. These people will also check to make certain that the applicant families meet the criteria established by Habitat for homeownership. This committee will work closely with the Family Support Committee in selecting a new homeowner.

FAMILIY SUPPORT COMMITTEE:
“Mentor/Teacher” Good people skills are needed to work with partner families both before and after construction to be sure that the families know what is required in the area of “sweat equity” (hours the homeowner works on their home), to provide records of the time requirement, and to help in the transition of true homeownership. These sponsor/advocate/friends will also help the families in the areas of budgeting and home maintenance. People on this committee must be comfortable with addressing problems that may arise.

FUNDRASING COMMITTEE:
“Outgoing or Creative”
The ability to identify and approach potential donors for either cash or “in-kind” gifts of material, labor, property, or support is ideal. This committee also needs people who can develop fundraising events and material, and to help with grant writing. It is important that this committee help potential donors understand Habitat’s principals. This committee shall also help organize and work at special events.

PUBLIC REATIONS COMMITTEE:
“Outgoing or Creative”
The ability to write articles for newsletters and the ability to work with local media, church groups and other groups and organizations about Habitat’s mission is best for this committee. People in this committee help “get the word out” about Habitat. This committee also helps promote special events.

SITE SELECTION COMMITTEE:
“Diligent/ Knowledgeable in Real Estate” This committee is for people who are interested in identifying potential sites for construction. This includes working with local government officials on acquiring land and lots for building, water, sewer hookups and working with the construction committee to be sure lots are “buildable” for a house that is suitable for a partner family. Those who like to dabble in real estate would be natural members.

CONSTRUCTION COMMITTEE:
“Knowledgeable in Construction”
This committee should be mainly comprised of people who have an interest in, or have knowledge of home construction. This can include general contractors, surveyors, architects, carpenters, concrete workers, plumbers, electricians, utility personnel, people who know building codes, and building suppliers. This committee will be the main contact in building projects, and it will be responsible for organizing the build. It will be available for the Site Selection Committee for advice in site selection. Working with the fund raising committee, its members will also help obtain discounts and “gifts in kind” for the homes. At least one person on this committee needs to be able to supervise the building process.

SAFETY COMMITTEE:
“Rule Enforcer”
This committee is committed to making sure that all building projects and special events are operating safely, with proper safety gear for all volunteers. This committee should be available to teach all volunteers how to work and dress safely. It should also make sure safety equipment is available at all times, and that everyone knows the rules. Must be willing to enforce the safety rules.

CHURCH RELATIONS COMMITTEE:
“Spiritual Leader” This committee is the most complex. The church is Habitat’s greatest friend, and a special relationship with all churches in our county is very important. One can be involved a couple ways on the church relations committee: 1. Be the representative from your church with the Apostle’s Build program*. This position would be the chair of the committee from your church. 2. Be on the affiliate’s committee that supports the church committees, and sets guidelines for the churches. This committee will provide speakers for churches. This committee will also oversee the entire Apostle’s Build Project within our county. *The Apostle’s Build Project is when 12 churches or coalitions of churches join together to build and fund a home. They share 1/12 of the cost and labor. The churches also commit to praying for Habitat on a regular basis. Please see the brochure on The Apostle’s Build Project for more information.

FOOD SERVICE:
“Service Oriented”
This committee provides food for volunteers at special events, home dedications, at the job sites, and sometimes for the new homeowners. Those who like to cook and serve food would fit best. At large events, this committee may help a contracted caterer if needed.
